![]() ![]() This summer, I had the opportunity and pleasure of taking a small group of students to DC for EdRising. Remember darling, perfection is unattainable.įocus on the progress, even if others can’t see the practice that went into it. But there are fifty hours of learning and progress that took place. I would have done some things differently. The drafting tape ripped the surface of the paper in areas. Another 40 hours went into the watercolor version. I spent nearly ten hours digitally painting my planning composition before painting the watercolor piece. I began planning my current painting in December, digitally. The concept of Practice making progress is easily applied to any skill you are hoping to better, (athletics, baking, mathematics, writing) but since you are reading the words of an art teacher-painting it is. I somehow finished an entire day early, which means I have a whole day to reflect on the process and nitpick the things I would have done differently and the successes I achieved along the way. I spent the weekend working on a watercolor painting due for class tomorrow. Honestly, knowing that watercolors have a mind of their own are the constant reminder that perfection is unattainable and rather, I should aim for progress and growth. If you know me, the above list is anxiety-inducing and for a self-proclaimed perfectionist, I also recognize there are art forms out there that cause much less stress. Planning is essential as winging it could be detrimental You have to preserve any white of the paper by masking (there is no white paint)Ĥ. Mistakes are difficult to cover (because hello, transparent watercolors)ģ. If you’ve dabbled in watercolors before, you know they areĢ. They were the emphasis for my art degree and are the subject for my current college course. ![]()
